(I think pirates are generally underappreciated in historical narratives, and in fact see a closer line between pirates like Blackbeard and modern landlords than I do between feudal lords and modern landlords.)

There's a joke about Columbus being the "first American capitalist" that involves a long satirical account of his "accomplishments" and ends with the punchline, "and he did it all on borrowed money" 😂

It's pop history but the book 7 Myths About the Spanish Conquest does a good job of explaining that conquistadors (and others) were just venture capitalists operating out of floating office buildings.
